Get ready for a day of splashing good times and sweet catches on Oregon's mighty Rogue River! This full-day fishing trip is tailor-made for families looking to create those "remember when" moments out on the water. With room for up to three guests, it's the perfect setup for parents and kids to bond over bent rods and screaming reels. We'll be chasing after prized salmon and trout species, all while soaking in the jaw-dropping scenery that makes the Rogue a bucket-list destination for anglers worldwide.

What to Expect on the Water

From the moment you step aboard our comfy fishing boat, you're in for a treat. Your seasoned guide will get everyone rigged up with top-notch gear (all included, so no need to bring your own unless you want to). We'll cruise to some of the Rogue's prime fishing spots, where your guide will share local knowledge and help you perfect your technique. Whether you're teaching the kiddos to cast or looking to land that trophy catch yourself, there's action for all skill levels. And don't sweat the paperwork – no fishing license needed for this charter!

Fishing 101: Rogue River Edition

On this trip, we'll be using a mix of techniques to target different species. For salmon, we might troll with flashers and cut-plug herring, or bounce-fish roe along the bottom. When going after trout, we could switch to casting lures or drifting flies. Your guide will explain each method and help you get the hang of it. The Rogue's clear waters often let you see fish following your bait – talk about excitement! Don't worry if you're new to fishing; we'll have you feeling like a pro in no time.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook Salmon: Also known as Kings, these are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. Rogue River Chinooks are famous for their size and fight. They typically range from 10 to 50 pounds, with some monsters pushing 60+. Fall is prime time for these brutes, but we see good numbers from July through October. When a King hits, hold on tight – it's like hooking a freight train!

Coho Salmon: Nicknamed "silvers" for their flashy sides, Coho are the acrobats of the salmon family. They're smaller than Chinooks, usually 6 to 12 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in aerial displays. Coho start showing up in September and stick around through November. Kids love these fish because they're a bit easier to handle but still put on a great show.

Sockeye Salmon: While not as common in the Rogue as other salmon species, hooking into a sockeye (also called "reds") is always a treat. They average 4 to 8 pounds and are prized for their rich, red flesh. We typically see them from June through August. Sockeye can be finicky biters, so landing one is a real accomplishment!

Rainbow Trout: The Rogue's resident rainbows are a year-round target and a great option for introducing kids to fishing. They usually run 1 to 5 pounds, with some reaching trophy sizes. These fish are known for their beautiful spotted patterns and acrobatic fights. Catching rainbows on light tackle is a blast, and they're perfect for teaching youngsters the art of playing a fish.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

The Rogue River isn't just a fishery; it's an experience. As you drift along, you'll be surrounded by towering forests, rugged cliffs, and maybe even spot some wildlife like ospreys, otters, or black bears. The scenery alone is worth the trip, but add in the chance to battle world-class fish, and you've got a recipe for an unforgettable day. Plus, there's something special about sharing these moments with family. Whether it's cheering on your kid's first catch or swapping stories over a riverside lunch, these are the memories that stick with you long after you're back on dry land.

Time to Book Your Spot

Learn more about the species

Chinook Salmon

Chinook salmon, also called kings, are the heavyweight champs of the Rogue. These bruisers average 15-30 pounds but can top 50! You'll find them in deep, cold holes, especially early morning or evening. Kings are light-sensitive, so fishing the bottom is key. Fall brings big runs as they return to spawn. Anglers prize chinook for their powerful fights and rich, flavorful meat. To hook one, try trolling with plugs or herring, or drifting roe near the river bottom. A local tip: when fly fishing, don't swing too far - keep that fly swimming in the strike zone. Landing a big king salmon is an unforgettable rush and a true test of skill.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon are a favorite target on the Rogue, typically weighing 8-12 pounds. These acrobatic fish love to jump, sometimes clearing 6 feet out of the water! Look for them in calm areas near debris or in large, deep pools. Fall is prime time as they return from the ocean to spawn. Anglers love coho for their hard-fighting spirit and delicious orange-red meat. To entice a strike, try swinging bright spinners in fast water or twitching jigs in holding water. A local trick is to float fish roe - fasten a chunk to your hook and swing it into likely lies. The fight of a fresh-run coho is something you won't soon forget.

Coho Salmon

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are a blast to catch on the Rogue. These colorful fighters usually run 8-24 inches and put up an acrobatic fight. You'll find them hanging out near gravelly shorelines or in cool, deep pools during summer. They love to strike at dusk or in the evening when they're actively feeding. Rainbows are popular with families because they're eager biters and great eating fish. To boost your odds, try nymphing with small flies or drifting some salmon eggs under a bobber. These trout have an incredible ability to see and smell bait, so light line and stealthy presentations are key. Nothing beats the thrill of watching a rainbow leap clear out of the water when it takes your lure.

Rainbow Trout

Sockeye Salmon

Sockeye salmon offer a unique fishing experience on the Rogue. Though smaller than other salmon at 4-15 pounds, they make up for it with their striking red spawning colors. Look for them from May through September as they swim upriver, hugging the bottom. Sockeye are prized for their rich, flavorful meat - some of the best-eating salmon out there. To catch them, use small flies or lures fished near the bottom where they're likely to strike. Water temp matters - when it's over 60°F, they're more likely to hit dry flies. A local trick is to match your fly size to the water level - big for high water, small for low. The fight of a sockeye in the current is a thrill you won't forget.
